Breast Reduction Surgery in Smithtown, Long Island

Serving Suffolk County

The breast reduction operation can be life changing for women that experience chronic pain and discomfort, as well as low self-esteem, due to oversized breasts. Dr. Lloyd Landsman, a Long Island breast reduction surgeon, has found that the procedure improves his patients’ happiness, confidence, physical comfort and overall quality of life.

What Does Breast Reduction Accomplish?

By removing excess breast tissue, fat and skin, breast reduction brings the breasts into better proportion with the rest of a woman’s body. This transformation provides women much-needed relief from the physical and emotional distress linked to heavy or oversized breasts. These symptoms can include the following:

  • Back, neck or shoulder pain caused by the weight of large breasts
  • Shoulder grooves or indentations caused by bra straps digging into the skin
  • Poor posture
  • Breathing problems
  • Skin rashes, chafing or irritation underneath the breasts
  • Self-consciousness or embarrassment due to poor body image or unwanted attention
  • Challenges finding well-fitting bras, blouses or dresses
  • Difficulty exercising or engaging in physical activities or hobbies

Breast Reduction Candidates

Dr. Landsman meets with every candidate to examine her breasts and ascertain her specific goals and expectations of surgery. He also reviews every candidate’s medical history to determine that she is healthy enough to undergo surgery. Women that smoke, have chronic health issues or unrealistic expectations of surgery may not be suitable candidates.

If Dr. Landsman believes that a candidate will benefit from breast reduction surgery, he will work with her to determine the amount of breast tissue that needs to be removed to achieve proportional, balanced-looking breasts.

Breast Reduction Procedure Details

To begin the procedure, Dr. Landsman creates incisions on the breasts. Incision pattern options include a circular pattern around the circumference of the areola, a keyhole-shaped incision around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease, and an anchor-shaped incision around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease and horizontally along the crease.

Through the incision, Dr. Landsman reduces, lifts and shapes the breast tissue, and excises extra skin. He layers sutures deep within the breast tissue to support the newly shaped breasts. When Dr. Landsman is finished removing and shaping the breast tissue, he brings the skin together underneath the smaller breast mound and closes it with sutures or surgical tape. Finally, he bandages the breasts and may place a compression garment over them to support the healing tissues.

Breast reduction is normally performed on an outpatient basis, so patients do not have to stay overnight at the hospital and can instead recover at home the night of the surgery.

The results of breast reduction are immediately visible, yet somewhat concealed by bruising and swelling. It can take up to a few months for the swelling to subside. The incision lines should fade over time but may never completely disappear.
