Breast Augmentation Just in Time for Summer: When to Have Surgery

Breast augmentation is a popular cosmetic procedure year round, but Dr. Lloyd Landsman often sees an increase in requests during the first half of the year. This is no coincidence as many women wish to have bigger, fuller breasts in time for bikini season.

Read on as Dr. Lloyd Landsman explains when to plan surgery if you wish to be ready in time for summer.

The Breast Augmentation Recovery Process

The full recovery period for breast augmentation typically lasts six to eight weeks. Most women are able to return to work and resume lightweight exercises within one to two weeks, and high-impact exercises after six to eight weeks. Most of the swelling, bruising and other post-op side effects subside by the six- to eight-week mark. For this reason, women who want to be ready and physically active by summer should plan to have surgery at least six weeks in advance.

When Will Results Appear?

It is important to note that it can take longer than six to eight weeks for the final results to appear. It is normal for implants to sit higher on the chest wall immediately after surgery. It can take three months for the implants to naturally settle into their final position, and it can take up to a year for all residual swelling to subside. The further in advance you have your surgery, the more time you give your body to heal.

If you have already undergone breast augmentation and are planning on spending time at the beach or by the pool this summer, remember to practice proper sun care. It is important to protect your healing scars from UV damage. Apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. You may also want to massage your scars with a silicone-based scar gel to promote healing.

Keep in mind that these are general guidelines. Dr. Landsman will provide you with a specific timeline based on your personal healing progress. Do not resume any activities until he clears you to do so.
