Otoplasty (Ear Surgery) in Smithtown, Long Island

What is Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)?

Otoplasty adjusts the size, shape or position of the ears. It is commonly performed to resize prominent ears or bring protruding ears closer to the head. Otoplasty can also address other congenital deformities that affect the ears’ appearance. Following otoplasty, the ears appear more balanced with the other facial features and/or more naturally positioned in relation to the head.

If you or a loved one is self-conscious of the appearance of your ears, otoplasty with Dr. Lloyd Landsman could be the right solution. With more than 25 years of plastic surgery experience, Dr. Landsman is one of the most respected otoplasty surgeons in the area. He will listen to your concerns and craft a surgical plan to deliver your desired results.

Who Is a Candidate for Otoplasty?

Ear surgery can help both children and adults who are embarrassed by the appearance of their ears for any of the following reasons:

  • The ears are abnormally large and not proportional with the other facial features.
  • The ears are misshapen or different sizes.
  • The ears stick out unusually far from the sides of the head.
  • The tips of the ears are folded over.
  • Part or all of the ear is missing.

Candidates should be in good physical health with no serious medical issues and no ongoing ear infections.

Ear Pinning Surgery for Children

Children undergoing otoplasty should be at least 5 years old, at which point the ears are usually fully developed. Children should also be able to communicate their feelings about surgery and follow Dr. Landsman’s instructions.

Otoplasty Procedure Details

Otoplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis. Either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation is used. The procedure takes approximately one to two hours to complete.

Dr. Landsman will begin by creating small incisions in the existing creases and folds of the ear. This reduces the visibility of scarring after surgery. The specific surgical techniques Dr. Landsman uses depend on the desired outcomes. He can remove excess skin and/or cartilage as needed, or create more natural-looking folds in the ear’s structures. For ears that protrude abnormally, Dr. Landsman can secure them closer to the head with sutures.

When Dr. Landsman is finished making the necessary adjustments, he will close the incisions with sutures and place bandages around the ears to protect them as they heal.

Ear Surgery Recovery

Dr. Landsman will provide specific recovery instructions after surgery. He will explain how to care for the healing incisions, manage any discomfort and resume normal activities. Normally, most patients resume work or school within a few days of surgery. Exercise and other strenuous activities that could potentially injure the healing ears should be avoided for three weeks or more. Dr. Landsman will also discuss when to see him for follow-up care. Following his post-operative instructions will minimize the risk of complications after otoplasty.
