Mommy Makeover FAQs

A mommy makeover is a popular plastic surgery package aimed at addressing women’s post-pregnancy body issues.

A mommy makeover typically combines the following procedures into a single operation: tummy tuck, breast enhancement and liposuction.

Pregnancy can be an amazing experience, but it can also take a toll on women’s bodies, causing weight gain, loose skin, and sagging breasts. But a mommy makeover can help restore women’s bodies to their pre-pregnancy shape.

Below Lloyd D. Landsman, MD, addresses some of the most frequently asked questions about mommy makeovers.

Who is a good mommy makeover candidate?

Mommy makeovers are aimed at women who have given birth. But anyone who wants to simultaneously improve the appearance of their breasts and abdomen can use this combination approach.

Patients should be in good health, at a stable weight and, ideally, done having children and breastfeeding.

What are patients’ options with a mommy makeover?

Most mommy makeovers include a tummy tuck, breast enhancement (lift and/or augmentation) and liposuction. But patients’ personal goals and plastic surgeons’ recommendations ultimately determine the approach.

What results can patients expect?

This depends on the procedures patients choose. But the combination of a tummy tuck, breast enhancement and liposuction does the following:

• Smooths and tightens the abdomen area

• Defines and contours the waistline

• Reduces sagging and restores volume and firmness in the breasts

How long does it take to see results?

Patients can get an idea of their results after three to four months. But the final outcome can take six months to a year to stabilize.

What is the recovery process?

Recovery varies from person to person. But generally, patients need to take one to three weeks off from work, depending on the procedures they have.

During the recovery period, patients should avoid heavy lifting (including small children) and vigorous physical activity. Bruising, swelling and some pain and discomfort should also be expected.

Are there any risks?

As with any surgical procedure, a mommy makeover involves risks and complications, including infection. Plus, the procedure results in scarring, although an experienced surgeon will ensure scars are concealable beneath clothing.
