Americans Spent $16.5 Billion on Plastic Surgery in 2018: What Were the Top Procedures?

Plastic surgery is more popular than ever before as Americans spent more than $16.5 billion on cosmetic procedures in 2018. This is according to the latest report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the largest professional organization of plastic surgeons.

Here, top plastic surgeon Dr. Lloyd Landsman reveals the top surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures, as well as other interesting trends found by ASPS.

Top Cosmetic Surgical Procedures

There were 1.8 million cosmetic surgical procedures performed in 2018 and for the thirteenth year in a row, breast augmentation was the top procedure. There were 313,735 breast augmentation procedures, up 4 percent from the previous year. Modern breast implants are strong, durable and come in a variety of shapes, textures and sizes, giving women more options in the type of breast appearance they want. Women can also increase breast fullness with fat grafting, which involves taking donor fat from one body area and injecting it into the breasts.

The top 5 surgical procedures are:

1. Breast augmentation – 313,735 (up 4 percent)

2. Liposuction – 258,558 (up 5 percent)

3. Rhinoplasty – 213,780 (down 2 percent)

4. Eyelid surgery – 206,529 (down 1 percent)

5. Tummy tuck – 130,081 (no change)

Top Cosmetic Non-Surgical Procedures

Not only are more Americans interested in enhancing their appearance, they are seeking minimally invasive ways to do it. Of the 17.7 million cosmetic procedures performed, 15.9 million of them were non-surgical. These procedures are popular because they do not require surgery, anesthesia, incisions or extensive recovery. Botox continues to be the top procedure in this category, with 7.4 million procedures. Here are the top 5 procedures:

1. Botox – 7.4 million (up 3 percent)

2. Dermal fillers – 2.6 million (up 2 percent)

3. Chemical peels – 1.3 million (up 1 percent)

4. Laser hair removal – 1 million (up 1 percent)

5. Microdermabrasion – 709,413 (down 4 percent)

Body Sculpting Procedures on the Rise

Body sculpting procedures in general saw an increase in 2018. Three of the top five surgical procedures focused on the body, while other procedures, like butt augmentation and thigh lifts, also increased.

“Daddy Do-Over” Trend Surges

Just as many women seek mommy makeovers, more men are embracing multiple cosmetic treatments to boost their appearance and self-confidence. This trend, referred to by some people as the “daddy do-over,” consists of surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures typically performed simultaneously in a single operation. Daddy do-over requests vary patient to patient but may include body contouring procedures to improve the “dad bod,” or facial rejuvenation procedures to turn back the clock and help men look as young as they feel.
