What Is the Facelift Recovery Like?

Many of Dr. Lloyd Landsman’s facelift patients have questions about the recovery process. Although the recovery is different for everyone, there are certain guidelines, restrictions and milestones that apply to nearly all patients. Read on as Dr. Landsman provides a general overview of what to expect after facelift.

Immediately Following Surgery

Immediately following surgery, you will have a special wrap around your head. You should be driven home by a friend or family member who will stay with you overnight.

Swelling of the face and neck, as well as mild discomfort are common at this point. You can take pain medication as prescribed to alleviate discomfort. Keep your head elevated, even when sleeping, to minimize swelling.

The Days after Facelift Surgery

The discomfort should start to subside within 48 hours of surgery. Swelling and bruising peak about this time, and then start to progressively subside. You should avoid bending over, lifting or engaging in any strenuous activity for approximately a week. You will need to sleep with your head elevated for approximately two weeks.

Dr. Landsman and his team will clarify when you can resume bathing, driving and working. You should be able to bathe and wash your hair the day after surgery. You will need to avoid driving for a few days. Most patients go back to work about  one week after surgery, depending on the nature of their work. More physically demanding jobs typically require additional time off. Of course, try to arrange to work from home during your recovery.

The Weeks after Facelift Surgery

In the weeks (and months) following facelift, it is very important to keep your face and healing scars out of the sun. You should be able to start applying makeup a week after surgery. Dr. Landsman will ask you to wait at least four to six weeks before resuming strenuous or athletic activity, including aerobic exercise. You can start with gentle activity, like walking, and slowly build up the intensity until you are back to your normal routine.

Although you will see improvements very soon after surgery, it can take at least nine months for your results to stabilize. In the weeks and months following your facelift, you will check in with Dr. Landsman regularly so he can chart your progress.
