Tummy Tuck

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) in Smithtown, Long Island

A Flatter and Toned Abdomen in Suffolk county

Individuals who are bothered by the appearance of a “muffin top” or “love handles” turn to Dr. Lloyd Landsman, a top tummy tuck surgeon serving Long island and Suffolk County. The board certified surgeon is trained and skilled in several tummy tuck techniques, including standard tummy tuck and mini tummy tuck.

Also known as abdominoplasty, tummy tuck is a body contouring procedure performed to eliminate excess skin and stubborn fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise. It also repairs weakened or separated abdominal muscles following pregnancy. By re-sculpting the abdominal area, Dr. Landsman is able to create a flatter, toned tummy and more flattering overall figure.

Tummy Tuck Candidacy

Ideal candidates for tummy tuck are individuals who have:

  • Excess, loose skin in the abdomen due to genetics, weight fluctuations, pregnancy or the natural aging process
  • Small deposits of fat on the abdomen that cannot be removed with diet and exercise
  • Weakened or separated abdominal muscles

Tummy tuck surgery is a highly personalized treatment. Dr. Landsman will tailor your treatment to meet your specific needs and concerns.

Full Tummy Tuck Procedure Details

Tummy tuck surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure, under general anesthesia. To begin, Dr. Landsman will perform appropriate liposuction and often use the fat for grafting the buttocks. The horizontal incision from hipbone to hipbone will be carried out. The incision will be below the belly button and can easily be concealed with a bikini or underwear. He will also suture the abdominal muscles together to create a flatter abdomen. Dr. Landsman will create an additional incision around the navel so he can raise it to a more natural-looking position on the abdomen.

In some cases, Dr. Landsman may recommend combining tummy tuck with other body contouring procedures to achieve more comprehensive results.  Liposuction is commonly performed along with most tummy tuck procedures. Tummy tuck can also be combined with breast lift and/or breast augmentation for a “mommy makeover,” which restores a woman’s pre-pregnancy figure.

What Is a Mini Tuck (Modified Tummy Tuck)?

Patients who have excess skin only on the lower abdomen may be appropriate candidates for a mini tummy tuck, also known as a modified tummy tuck. Mini tummy tuck is also appropriate for patients with the need for abdominal liposuction with better skin tone than the patients who need a full abdominoplasty. A less complex version of full tummy tuck, mini tummy tuck only requires one incision, located below the bikini/underwear line, usually shorter than the incision used for a full abdominoplasty. With this less invasive option, Dr. Landsman is still able to tighten the underlying muscles for a flatter contour. Recovery from mini tummy tuck is generally easier and shorter than with full tummy tuck.

What to Expect After Tummy Tuck

Following tummy tuck, Dr. Landsman’s patients report feeling a boost in self-confidence. They are pleased to find that their wardrobe options expand as it is easier to fit into certain types of clothing. Exercise and other physical activities are easier and more comfortable. Patients can maintain their results by following a healthy lifestyle (e.g., exercising regularly and eating a balanced diet). Dr. Landsman can provide more tips on how to prolong your leaner and flatter abdomen following your procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tummy Tuck

Do you get a scar from a tummy tuck?

Tummy tuck is performed through a horizontal incision right above the bikini line. The incision leaves scarring, but the scarring is low enough to be concealed beneath a bikini bottom or pair of underwear. Dr. Landsman will plan out your scar with you ahead of time so you can see exactly where it will be placed. Good scar management techniques, such as silicone sheets or topical creams, can help the scar fade over time.

How long do tummy tucks last?

You will be able to enjoy your tummy tuck results for a long time, provided you do not fluctuate significantly in weight or become pregnant after surgery. If you have children after your surgery, the pregnancy can reverse some of your results.

When can I start working out after tummy tuck?

Depending on Dr. Landsman’s assessment of your healing progress, you may be able to resume light activity, such as walking on a treadmill, within one to two weeks of surgery. He will clear you to resume more strenuous activity, such as lifting weights, running or doing abdominal exercises, approximately four to six weeks after surgery. You should start slow and gradually increase the intensity of your workouts, stopping if anything causes pain or discomfort.

Can tummy tucks treat stretch marks?

Tummy tuck treats stretch marks only if they are located on the skin that is removed during surgery. This usually applies to stretch marks on the lower abdomen.

What is the difference between liposuction and tummy tuck?

Abdominal liposuction and tummy tuck both remove selective pockets of fat from the stomach. Tummy tuck also removes loose skin and tightens the abdominal muscles as well as the remaining skin. Since liposuction does not tighten the skin, it is important that candidates have relatively elastic, firm skin to achieve a good result.

Do I need to lose weight before tummy tuck?

You are not required to lose weight prior to tummy tuck. But for the best results, you should be at or within a few pounds of your target weight.

When can I go back to work after my tummy tuck?

Most patients are able to return to desk jobs 10 days to two weeks after surgery. Patients who work physically demanding jobs or jobs that require a lot of heavy lifting may need to take additional days off to recuperate.

What can I do to prepare for my tummy tuck?

Dr. Landsman will discuss preparing for tummy tuck in detail with you during your consultation.rnIn general, you should stop smoking at least two weeks before surgery, stop drinking alcohol at least one week before surgery, stop taking any medications that could thin your blood or increase the risk of complications (you will have a complete list of medications, vitamins, and supplements to avoid), eat a healthy diet, exercise and get plenty of sleep.rnMake arrangements for the day of surgery, arrange for a ride to and from surgery, and plan for someone to stay with you for at least the first 24 hours after the operation.
