Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery) in Smithtown, Long Island

Serving Suffolk County

An unattractive nose can draw unwanted attention and can also cause the face to look off-balanced or out of proportion. Rhinoplasty is an excellent solution for individuals who are unhappy or self-conscious about the appearance of their nose. By reshaping or resizing the nose, rhinoplasty improves the harmony of the facial features.

Because the nose is the most prominent feature of the face, it is imperative that you work with a rhinoplasty surgeon that possesses the right combination of training, skill and artistry. New York plastic surgeon Dr. Lloyd Landsman is a leading board-certified plastic surgeon with years of experience producing beautiful and natural-looking rhinoplasty results for Long Island and New York area patients. He also attracts an out of town following.

Are You a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty can address both cosmetic and functional concerns of the nose, including:

  • Bump or dip on the bridge
  • Wide nasal bridge
  • Bulbous, drooping or upturned nasal tip
  • Large, wide or unevenly sized nostrils
  • Crooked or asymmetrical nose
  • Deviated septum
  • Enlarged turbinates and airway problems

During your consultation, a computer generated simulation will be carried out for you to see what your results will look like. Dr. Landsman will tailor your rhinoplasty procedure to match your specific needs and goals. Depending on these factors, he may recommend combining rhinoplasty with another plastic surgery to produce more beautiful results. Rhinoplasty is often combined with chin augmentation (chin implant), facial fat grafting, and eyelid surgery.

Rhinoplasty Procedure Details

Rhinoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure, under general anesthesia. There are two main techniques Dr. Landsman can use for your procedure. The first, called the open technique, involves creating an incision on the thin strip of skin dividing the nostrils, also known as the columella. This approach gives the surgeon more visibility when operating.

With the closed technique, Dr. Landsman creates the incision on the inside of the nostrils. This approach leaves no visible scarring, but limits Dr. Landsman’s visibility during the operation.

To reshape the nose, Dr. Landsman will either remove cartilage and bone or utilize a cartilage graft from the septum and in some cases from the ear. He will make other changes as necessary (e.g., smooth out a bump on the bridge, reshape or resize the nostrils) to enhance the appearance of the nose. Changes to the underlying nasal structure may also be performed to improve breathing function.

A cartilage allograft is a useful material that can contribute to outstanding rhinoplasty results. In some cases, Dr. Landsman uses a cartilage allograft to reconstruct the nasal bridge or tip, or to correct other irregularities in nasal shape or appearance. Flexible and easy to manipulate, allografts are a helpful tool for procedures like rhinoplasty that require extreme precision.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty for African and Asian Facial Types

For ethnic varieties of rhinoplasty, Dr. Landsman will employ onlay biocompatible grafts to improve tip projection and add height if the nose has a “flat” appearance. Alarplasty (narrowing of the nostrils) is often performed simultaneously when needed. Standalone alarplasty is offered to candidates seeking to narrow the nostrils while maintaining a more ethnic character to their nose.

Corrective (Secondary) Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty results are usually good. However, there are some instances in which the surgery produces unwanted aesthetic results or complications (e.g., structural damage that leads to impaired breathing). Corrective rhinoplasty, also known as revision or secondary rhinoplasty, aims to address cosmetic and functional errors as a result of a prior rhinoplasty procedure. Revision rhinoplasty is significantly more challenging than initial rhinoplasty due to a variety of factors including weakened underlying structural support of the nose. Dr. Landsman is one of the best corrective rhinoplasty surgeons in the area and receives many referrals for patients of other plastic surgeons. Careful planning and timing (most patients should wait a minimum of one year after primary rhinoplasty) are key in corrective surgery, and Dr. Landsman will use his expertise to design a treatment plan that yields the best results.

What to Expect During Recovery

Initially, your nose will be swollen and bruised. There may be some bruising around the eyes as well. With proper rest and care, the majority of swelling and bruising will subside within the first few weeks of recovery.

Every patient heals at their own pace. Most people take one week off from work, but if you can work from home it is possible to not miss any work at all. During the healing process you may or may not feel comfortable in public. Strenuous activities, including exercise, should be avoided during this time, as they can increase the risk of bleeding and other post-op complications. However, short walks are encouraged to promote good circulation. Dr. Landsman will provide you with a detailed list of instructions to follow during your recovery. He and his team will also meet with you regularly for follow-up appointments to monitor your healing progress, remove any sutures and advise you when it is safe to resume all normal activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the potential risks of rhinoplasty?

Like all surgical procedures, rhinoplasty comes with a degree of risk. These include bleeding, breathing obstruction, poor wound healing, infection, skin discoloration and changes in skin sensation. Working with a board certified and experienced rhinoplasty surgeon like Dr. Landsman significantly decreases the chances of a complication or an unattractive result. Dr. Landsman will discuss all the potential risks and complications, before your procedure.

When will my final results of rhinoplasty become visible?

While some results of rhinoplasty will be noticeable a week or two after surgery, the final results may take up to a year to become visible. This is how long it takes for residual swelling (mostly in the tip) to resolve and for the nose to heal completely.

Can my rhinoplasty procedure be covered by insurance?

Your health insurance may cover all or a portion of your rhinoplasty if the procedure is determined to be medically necessary. This form of rhinoplasty, known as a functional rhinoplasty, is performed to improve breathing or correct other functional problems. If your nose has been injured in some way, insurance may cover some of the costs of reconstruction.
